Flower Power is a photo series I created to shed a positive light on pit bulls, especially those in shelters. America euthanizes upward of 1 million pit bulls every year. These misunderstood dogs... More > suffer from prejudice all around the world. This series is an invitation to see them for the beautiful, soulful beings they are. All the models from the series are shelter pit bulls who were waiting for adoption when I took their portrait. Some of them still are. Under the hashtag #PitBullFlowerPower, the series has become more than a photo series: it has become a movement. For the 2016 edition of the calendar, I was helped by the wonderful Sara Ann Grace who did the layout design. The title font is courtesy of Jessica Hische. Partial proceeds of the calendar will also benefit rescue groups.< Less

Flower Power is in its third year! It’s incredible how much impact this project has had so far. Besides getting dogs adopted, it has started a revolution in the way pit bulls are perceived... More > around the world. Decades ago, society created a modern hellhound: the pit bull. Without being a proper breed, “pit bull” became an umbrella term for any “scary-looking” dog. As stories of horrific abuse emerged, press and politics blamed the victims, the dogs, instead of blaming the real human culprits. Ever since, pit bull advocates have fought an uphill battle. How do you prove the dogs’ innocence when the public assumes guilt, and when bans and vilification serve political agendas? With Flower Power, people are seeing beyond the looks and prejudice, some for the first time. They peer into the pit bull’s soul. Instagram: @SophieGamand. #PitBullFlowerPower.
