More > a poetic gesture towards the inhuman scale of big data. Michael Mandberg wrote software that parses the entirety of the English-language Wikipedia database and programmatically lays out nearly 7500 volumes, complete with covers, and then uploads them to Lulu.com for print-on-demand. Print Wikipedia draws attention to the sheer size of the encyclopedia's content and the impossibility of rendering Wikipedia as a material object in fixed form: Once a volume is printed it is already out of date. It is also a work of found poetry built on what is likely the largest appropriation ever made. As we become increasingly more dependent on information and source material on the Internet today, Mandiberg explores the accessibility of its vastness.< Less

More > technology was applied to a subset of the Documenting the American South (DocSouth) digital collections. Personal and location names were hand-annotated to achieve a gold standard, and GATE, a text engineering tool, was run under two conditions: a defaults baseline and a test run that included gazetteers built from DocSouth's Colonial and State Records collection. Overall, GATE performance is promising, and numerous strategies for improvement are discussed. Next, derived location annotations were georeferenced and stored in a geodatabase through automated processes, and a prototype for a web-based map search was developed using the Google Maps API. This project showcases innovations with automated NER coupled with GIS technologies, and strongly supports further investment in applying these techniques across...< Less

Evolving needs for universities, municipalities, and corporations demand more sustainable and efficient techniques for data management. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) enables decision makers to... More > spatially analyze the built environment. The geospatial approach is trifold. Efficiency is increased through automation of current practices such as work requests and routine maintenance. Sustainable practices will be developed by generating self-guided campus tours. Lastly, safety will be enhanced throughout campus by increasing emergency response access. Optimizing data management was conducted in three phases. First, a baseline assessment for facility management at Kansas State University was conducted. Second, case study interviews and research was conducted with leaders in GIS management. Third, practices for geospatial data management were adapted and implemented for Kansas State University: the building of a centralized database, constructing a 3D routing network, and modeling a virtual campus in 3D.< Less
