Siddhartha (1922) by Hermann Hesse is a novel whose title character is an exceedingly intelligent young Brahman, a member of Hindu's highest caste, who leads an ostensibly charmed and wealthy life,... More > yet is existentially hollow. Originally written in Hesse's native German, Siddhartha is his 9th and most famous work. It wasn't published in the U.S. until 1951, but would achieve cult status there during the turbulent social crises of the 60s and 70s. Hesse had difficulty writing Siddhartha, which took him several years, as he felt he could not achieve a similarly enlightened state as his protagonist. During Siddhartha's journey of self-discovery he delves into religious philosophies such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and asceticism, denying the physical body to reach enlightenment. Gradually he realizes that these austerities disrupt life's unity by denying the wonders of the physical body. So from here Siddhartha goes out for a life of sensuous physical pleasures and material success.< Less

Tree of the Volga By D. Philipp Kaiser
eBook (ePub): $1.99
Tree of the Volga is the fourth of my novels spinning the stories of the struggles of different German families and their many descendants, as they emigrated ever farther away from old Germany. It... More > begins in the Pfalz of the southwest. A simple shoemaker, Johann Dietrich Kaiser, wonders if another war will again ravage the area. War passes them by, but not death. That visit changed his life and the lives of many others forever. As you move through the pages of the next 162 years, you will meet many more additional characters spinning out their lives. I sincerely hope you enjoy it as a fictional story; but remember, this is fiction and fantasy, and not a research manual, and you should not assume any of it true. Some of it is, much of it is not! Hopefully, reading it may spark some questions about your own ancestors. Even better, it might make you think about God, from who these amazing people got their strength to overcome all obstacles.
