1882 Dystopian Science Fiction, alternate history It may be doubted whether a brighter, more prosperous, and specially a more orderly colony than Britannula was ever settled by British colonists.... More > But it had its period of separation from the mother country, though never of rebellion,—like its elder sister New Zealand. Indeed, in that respect it simply followed the lead given her by the Australias, which, when they set up for themselves, did so with the full co-operation of England. Australia is an immigrant society and, as John Winston Howard famously said, its people 'decide who comes into this country and the circumstances in which they come.' Every generation has exercised... More > its right of veto, not always without controversy. Elections have been won and lost on the issue, none with less honour than Howard's own Children Overboard election of 2001. Unlike an immigrant wave, the arrival of a new biography of the former conservative prime minister is always timely, particularly one to which the man himself has contributed, or at least had words put into his mouth. As the Children Overboard disgrace amply demonstrates, we are not always the authors of our own destiny, or even of the record of our past. The history of Australia has seen many leading characters come and go, and it has seen truth-telling wax and wane. John Winston Howard is still with us, but at least with the publication of 'The Demonist' his dark deeds are now more or less factually on the record.< Less

More > acquire cultural and financial significance through personal stories, exhibition histories and auctions, to name a few. This led me to the John Kaldor Family Collection of contemporary art that was donated to the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Australia. I marvel at John Kaldor's persistance and dedication to contemporary art but I also wondered if I could develop significance in my own versions of his artworks if I had them re-created by the painting fabrication company I work with in China and organized my own exhibition of artworks from the Kaldor Collection. With this as my focus I developed a catalog with images of the artworks and essays by artist Joey G. Cruz and art historians Andrea Bronte and Mary Coyne to give context and value to my re-made artworks.< Less
