Paperback: $14.98

With the recent lightning swift combat successes of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, there may be a tendency to view with awe the lethality of U.S. technology and training. Indeed, the U.S. military is... More > unmatched in the raw combat power it is capable of unleashing in a conflict. This monograph, however, argues that the true strength of America’s military might lies not in its hardware or high-tech equipment, but in its soldiers. Dr. Leonard Wong and his colleagues traveled to Iraq to see what motivated soldiers to continue in battle, to face extreme danger, and to risk their lives in accomplishing the mission. As a means of comparison, they began by interviewing Iraqi Regular Army prisoners of war to examine their combat motivation and unit dynamics. The researchers then interviewed U.S. combat troops fresh from the fields of battle to examine their views.< Less

Even before Operation IRAQI FREEDOM began, the Strategic Studies Institute (SSI) published a monograph about planning for transition to Phase IV operations. Now that we are 3 years beyond the start... More > of that transition, the debate continues about the adequacy of planning for and proficiency of execution of Phase IV operations in Iraq and elsewhere. The debate most often surrounds three issues concerning this final operational phase: the relationship to preceding operational phases; responsibility for planning; and responsibility for execution. Inevitably, the interagency process becomes central to addressing each of these issues. A colloquium on “U.S. Military Operations in Iraq: Planning, Combat, and Occupation” was held November 2, 2005, and was co-sponsored by SSI and Johns Hopkins’ School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). An exceptional combination of scholars, practitioners, and policymakers examined persistent issues central to the important and ongoing debate surrounding the colloquium theme.< Less

Semper Erratus: A Combat Journal By Jonathan George

A good friend of mine gave me a nice Marine patterned camouflaged journal for Christmas just before the Iraq war began. Since then, I have packed that journal with me on every deployment and... More > safeguarded it like I would my rifle. This journal chronicles my experiences in the Marine Corps while deployed in support of the Global War on Terrorism. I have changed nothing except some grammatical errors. The writing and syntax are as it was written. I did this for my family and my children and their children. So that no one will be left wondering what I did during the war. I was never in a situation where I felt scared for my life and I am confident no one will make a movie about me. The other reason for publishing this journal was to showcase my love for photography. Sure, there are lots of gratuitous photos of me in cool war poses, but I also tried to include some of my best photographs, and also a few photos that capture the moment, whether blurry, untouched or downright mundane. They are real.< Less
