Several years later, visiting the University of Tokyo, I asked one of the professors the same question and received a similar answer, with the exception that even though he participated in the war, he did not know anything about why the war did happen. During the fare-well party, in the wee hours in the morning, I asked the professor the same question. With his defenses lowered by the consumed sake he answered “to liberate Asia from the Western domination.” My curiosity aroused, I carried several studies on this topic in both the United States and Japan.
