Widdowson in his book Stylistics and the Teaching of Literature (1975) somewhat restricts the domain and defines stylistics as ‘the study of literary discourse from a linguistic orientation’. He points out that Stylistics involves both literary criticism and linguistics. The ‘style’ component in its morphological make-up relates to literary criticism while the ‘istics’ component to linguistics. He denies Stylistics as an autonomous domain and places it as an intermediary between literary criticism and linguistics. However, Stylistics has already been established as a major branch of linguistics, concerned with the interpretations of any kind of texts.
