The Kepler conjecture, named after the 17th-century mathematician and astronomer Johannes Kepler, is a mathematical conjecture about sphere packing in three-dimensional Euclidean space. It says that... More > no arrangement of equally sized spheres filling space has a greater average density than that of the cubic close packing (face-centered cubic) and hexagonal close packing arrangements. The density of these arrangements is around 74.05%.In 1998 Thomas Hales, following an approach suggested by Fejes Tóth (1953), announced that he had a proof of the Kepler conjecture. Hales' proof is a proof by exhaustion involving the checking of many individual cases using complex computer calculations. Referees have said that they are "99% certain" of the correctness of Hales' proof, and now Kepler conjecture is accepted as a theorem. More > and servant, allies and rivals in the scientific revolution of the seventeenth century. Together they would determine the true order of the solar system and lay the foundations of astrophysics. Both a mystic and a scientist, Kepler was a canny survivor as well, who carried on his work amid the splendors and intrigues of renaissance Prague, beset by witchcraft trials, public burnings, and the devastation of the Thirty Years War.< Less

These images are highly accurate geometric models of our solar system. They were inspired by the remarkable work of John Martineau, who wrote "A Little Book of Coincidence". Tiled images of... More > planetary surfaces and related images form the backgrounds. Images are two or more orbits defined by simple 2D (circles, triangles, squares, pentagons, hexagons, octagons) or 3D geometries (e.g. tetrahedron, icosahedron, dodecahedron) typically with 99.9% or greater accuracy. The work picks up where Johannes Kepler's mystical exploration left off. More info: http://www.GeometryCode.com< Less
