Just as every translator interprets, every reader brings his or her abilities to understanding (interpreting) what they read. Valuing this tendency rather than fighting that which is natural, I intend to offer up ways of seeing the text: Together we will re-view the text through its images rather than hearing only the words as traditionally translated.< Less

This version of the Tao Te Ching is in gender-neutral language, in English, and with American spelling. It is based on the English translation of the Tao Te Ching done by James Legge as part of... More > volume 39 of The Sacred Books of the East series, issued in 1891 by Oxford University Press (note that this translation is in the public domain). For this book, that translation was then changed into gender-neutral language and American spelling by Nancy Quinn Collins. The gender-neutral language is used in the whole book; for example "Not to value and employ people of superior ability" is used rather than "Not to value and employ men of superior ability"; the only exceptions are that quotes are left as they originally were, and it is written that (as it really was historically) only princes and kings call[ed] themselves 'Orphans, 'Men of small virtue,' and as 'Carriages without a nave.'< Less

Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching: The Way By Tom Noe
eBook (PDF): $1.49
This version of the Tao Te Ching is not a translation, but my personal attempt to come to terms with this classic of religion and literature. Here is the text alone, without history and without... More > comment. Much of what Lao Tzu says is addressed to people of power, but all of us, powerful or not, can learn from him or, rather, he can help us to unlearn what we think we know. I have loved this book for many years, because it has challenged me, as a Christian, to think in new ways about God’s presence in the world as the abiding Holy Spirit. Lao Tzu wasn’t thinking about the Holy Spirit when he produced this masterpiece, but God has always been here in the world for all to see, and I think Lao Tzu saw him. In Christ, God humbled himself to become a human being, and this counter-intuitive way—a profound humility at the center of human life—wouldn’t seem strange at all to Lao Tzu. I can almost hear him now: “Be quiet! Just let them read it!"< Less
