Usila Chinantec is spoken in the district of Tuxtepec, Oaxaca. It is in the north western part of the Chinantla. It differs considerably from Lealao Chinantec (No. 35) and Tlatepuzco Chinantec (No.... More > 39). It has five phonemic levels of tone but does not have the contrast of ballistic and controlled syllable types found in the other Chinantec languages. Tone has a heavy functional load, especially in the grammar. It is written meticulously throughout. Usila Chinantec verbs are classified in the high tone bracket or the low tone one, which allows for more predictability in the paradigms than was possible for the other Chinantec dialects. The detailed 100 page grammar is a highlight of the dictionary. The dictionary contains approximately 5,000 entries. Illustrative sentences for the different senses of the entry word were supplied by Basilio Sabino and other Chinantec speakers. Appendices give Kinship terms and Place names; Numerals are included in the grammar.< Less
