Burke County was formed in 1777 from part of Rowan County. It was named in honor of Dr. Thomas Burke (for all of his work in the Continental Congress representing NC) who later became the third... More > Governor of the State - during the American Revolution. Thomas Burke, Richard Caswell, and Abner Nash all received a county in their honor as Revolutionaries (while they were alive). Because Burke County was one of the “western frontiers” it will be constantly divided (reduced in size) into other counties. Buncombe (1791), Yancey (1833), Caldwell (1841), and Mitchell (1861) will all take pieces (along with other adjoining counties) except Buncombe which takes the largest portion of Burke’s western extremity. Therefore, the reader needs to be aware of these other counties by time-frame in order to research the proper locale. Additional Volumes are planned to be released in 2016.< Less

This book contains the last two of the five boxes for this county. Box 4 contains records from (1840-1897) and one box of nothing but undated records. Burke and Stokes County are the only two counties that contain one fibred box of undated records.< Less
