They are four great friends, war heros, booze hounds and womanizers; they save the honor of the Queen, foil dastardly plots, and get mixed up in affairs of state...and though they're called Musketeers, primarily go about using swords. This was a piece of historical fiction back when there wasn't really historical fiction, and Dumas lets the reader believe the story to be true in its opening. The characters are larger than life - some are real, but most are made up. All of them however are wonderful and unforgettable. An all around great adventure book. The poor d'Artagnan travels to Paris to join the Musketeers. He suffers misadventure and is challenged to a duel by each of three musketeers (Athos, Aramis and Porthos). Attacked by the Cardinal's guards, the four unite and escape. D'Artagnan and Constance help the French queen give a particular piece of jewelry to her paramour, the Duke of Buckingham. The Cardinal learns of this and coaxes the French king to hold a ball where the queen must wear the jewelry; its absence will reveal her infidelity. The four companions retrieve the jewelry from England.< Less
