He published a popular six-volume history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and also wrote Studies of the Book of Mormon (unpublished until after his death), which discussed the validity of the Book of Mormon as an ancient record. Roberts was denied a seat as a member of United States Congress because of his practice of plural marriage.Roberts was born in Warrington, Lancashire, England, the son of Benjamin Roberts, an alcoholic blacksmith and ship plater, and Ann Everington, a seamstress. The thesis will explore and challenge currently accepted scholarship regarding Joseph Smith as originator and author of the temples design by reexamining William Weeks’ contribution as architect. A macabre specter memorialized through misty daguerrotypes and extant foundation stones, the Nauvoo Temple in its physical absence, continued to epitomize this contentious and volatile transitional period in Mormon history.
