People living in urban and suburban areas are disconnected from agriculture. The food that we consume is grown many miles from our homes and we have little knowledge of how that food travels from... More > seed to plate. Incorporating edible landscapes into public land in cities brings us into direct contact with the food we eat. Edible landscapes are neighborhood scale sites with the specific purpose of producing food. Edible landscapes were typically developed with a focus on food production and little attention to aesthetics, the general public often thinks of these landscapes as messy and farm-like. Through quality design edible landscapes can be productive and aesthetically pleasing. The combination of these ideals creates exciting and unique solutions that differ from the edible landscapes of the past. Attention to site and community design principles as well as growing conditions results in a new type of public landscape that can enhance a community’s appearance while feeding its residents.< Less

From the Preface "The name of Venerable Anne of Jesus is probably familiar to all those who are well acquainted with the life, the work of foundation and the correspondence of St. Teresa of... It is, therefore, not too much to say that none of these subjects can be properly and fully understood unless one has a more than cursory knowledge of her own life and aims. Above all this she was endowed with talents not even second to those of St. Teresa, and she reached a wonderful degree of sanctity." This is a story that cannot be found in print elsewhere, of the transplanting of the Teresian reform from Spain to France and the Netherlands, a remarkable fete given that all of those countries were at war and the populations of France and the Netherlands not especially amenable to Spaniards. Hugo's work has spawned many interpretations on film, television and in the theatre, and like Les Miserables, it might be considered less famous as a book than it is on the wide screen. The novel provides an expression of Hugo's Romantic outlook that is early enough in his career not to be tainted by the political landscape but which instead makes use of established systems of authority in the Church and the Army. Clearly this is made necessary by setting the story at the end of the fifteenth century, but in doing so it shows Hugo in his earlier incarnation as the Romantic rather than the Politician.< Less
