Paperback: $26.62
Ships in 3-5 business days
This Manual was primarily written to assist Irish secondary-school students who are preparing to compete in the Irish Mathematical Olympiad (held in May each year) or the International Mathematical... More > Olympiad (held each July). It has also proved useful in other countries, and is popular among people who simply enjoy mathematics. The Mathematical Olympiads are written examinations, based on what is called "second--level mathematics". There are significant variations between countries in the content of second--level programmes in Mathematics. Thus, Irish competitors find themselves faced with problems that require background knowledge that is not covered in the Senior Cycle programme for Irish schools. In order to have a reasonable chance of success, they need to master this material. The authors are academics who have many years experience as voluntary trainers of Olympiad contestants and in other mathematical enrichment activities for young people. The selection of material is based on this experience.< Less

Take part in an unusual journey through time... From the 1920s of the 20th century until today, the best chess players from all over the world continue fighting in Chess Olympiads. The author spent... More > 10 years reconstructing the history and results of Olympiads. It was slow and meticulous work involving searching and gathering information from various sources. He explained many unclear match situations, and corrected wrong entries in games notations, some of which were repeated by generations of chess researchers. London 1927 was the first official Chess Olympiad. Most of chess stars of that time took part in the tournament, among them the future world champion - Max Euwe. The next book from the series, was a great challenge for the author. In 1928 in The Hague, started the second Chess Olympiad. When it was finished there were very few keepsakes, information and... More > photos… It seems to be mysterious, the more so as the sports level equalled it from London, and in 1928 the media was in possession of new technology which allowed the filming of events and broadcast it across the ocean. The political- fiction thread was also interesting. Did the Americans want to prove anything? Why didn’t the team from the UK appear? The second part of the series is even better, nicer and more interesting. A lot of great games of the Olympiad were analyzed, commented on and also appeared in diagrams. It is incredible how the masters could “cheat” an opponent in critical situations and contestants who were less experienced ruined a certain win for them and their teams! When teams have to play for the victory, anything can happen…< Less
