The heavily armed P-61 Black Widow was the U.S. Army Air Force's first dedicated night fighter. Equipped with radar, four .50 caliber machine guns and four 20mm. cannons, the Widow was a fearsome... More > adversary. It flew as both an intruder and interceptor in Europe and the Pacific. Originally printed by Northrop in 1945, the YP-61 Pilot's Flight Operating Manual taught pilots everything they needed to know before entering the cockpit. Originally classified “Restricted”, the manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. I would imagine that P.T. Barnum would be just as famous and infamous today as he was in the 1850’s. Barnum said of himself “I am a showman by profession..and all the gilding shall make... More > nothing else of me.” It is interesting what we remember him for today. The Barnum and Bailey Circus, wasn’t created until he was 61 years old. Barnum was a massive serial entrepreneur. The list of his ventures would fill pages and pages. His failures were infamous. But so was his determination to get back up dust himself off and move on, often to another town. Like entrepreneurs today, he saw ways to get money that others either didn’t see or didn’t want to put the work in to develop.< Less

This research project, “Dynamic Bridge Substructure Evaluation and Monitoring,” was sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) under contract number DTFH61-96- C-00030. The... More > research was funded to investigate the possibility that by measuring and modeling the dynamic response characteristics of a bridge substructure, one could determine the condition and safety of the substructure and identify its foundation type (shallow or deep). Determination of bridge foundation conditions with this approach may be applied to quantify losses in foundation stiffness caused by earthquake, scour, and impact events. Identification of bridge foundation type may be employed to estimate bridge stability and vulnerability under dead and live load ratings, particularly for unknown bridge foundations. Chapter 2 introduces the research project scope and presents the results of a literature review of related topics. Chapter 3 describes the bridges in Texas that were selected for modal vibration tests during the research.< Less

The F-82 “Twin Mustang” was conceived during WWII as a long-range fighter escort. Like the P-51, it was designed by North American's brilliant engineer, Edgar Schmued. The F-82 utilized... More > two extended P-51 fuselages, mounted to a newly- designed center wing and tail. The plane incorporated new propeller assemblies and a unique, four-wheel landing gear. In short, while the plane would be cosmetically similar to the Mustang, in reality it was an entirely new beast. The F-82 wasn’t ready before WWII ended, but the program escaped cancellation, and planes entered operational service in 1948. The F-82 became the last piston-
powered fighter ordered by the USAF. It flew as an escort for SAC B-29s, and with distinction as a night fighter in Korea. It was retired in 1953. Originally printed by the USAF and North American, this pilot’s handbook provides a glimpse
inside the cockpit of this warbird. Originally classified “Restricted”, the manual was de-classified and is here reprinted in book form.< Less
