Whoever called from the pay phone on Fifth Street was long gone, but everyone noticed the yellow crime scene tape protecting the dusty alley. Three detectives were bent over, looking into the dust, measuring some barefoot prints, and the crowd wondered and murmured to itself. A tall, thin man with a full crop of blond hair and a white tennis windbreaker was sitting on the low brick wall which ran along the alley for half a block or so.
