The Assyrian American Herald was the first Assyrian periodical to be published in the United States and it was the first weekly Assyrian newspaper to be published anywhere. Its editor and publisher... More > was Paul S. Newey (1885-1960) who immigrated to the United States in 1906 and eventually came to Chicago to study at the Chicago Theological Seminary where he received a B.D. degree in 1913. He founded the Assyrian Congregational Church in Chicago in 1919 which he served until his passing in 1960. In July 1915 he started the Assyrian American Herald which was first printed from hand written copy. By October 1915 the paper appeared in type designed by Newey. The Herald continued for almost six years (until May 1921) and provides an important source of information about the history of the Assyrians during WWI, their struggle for national survival and the challenges they faced in adjusting to life in the diaspora. Volume VI contains 23 issues from January 1918 to June 1918 (Vol. 3: Nos. 25-47).< Less
Paul Bedjan (1838-1920) was born in Khosrova in Salamas where he was educated at a school established by French Lazarist missionaries. At the age of 18, he went to Paris to join the Lazarist order... More > and further his studies. In 1861 he was ordained a priest in the Roman rite although he was a member of the Chaldean Church. After working among his own people in Iran for 12 years, he returned to Europe to pursue a career in editing and publishing books in Syriac and modern Assyrian. His works were beautifully printed by the famous German printer Wilhelm E. Drugulin in Leipzig. Among the many valuable volumes Bedjan edited, one of the most important is his 7 volume collection of the stories of saints and martyrs. Volume VI contains texts about Clement, the disciple of Peter, Onesimus, the disciple of Paul, Sophia and her daughters, Polycarp, Julian Saba, Eusebius of Samosata, Abraham Qidunaya and many others.
