Jan Steen was a Dutch genre painter of the Dutch Golden Age 17th century. Psychological insight, sense of humour and abundance of color are marks of his art. Daily life was Jan Steen's main pictorial... More > theme. Many of the genre scenes he portrayed, as in The Feast of Saint Nicholas, are lively to the point of chaos and lustfulness. Many of Steen's paintings bear references to old Dutch proverbs or literature. He often used members of his family as models, and painted quite a few self-portraits in which he showed no tendency of vanity. Steen painted also historical, mythological and religious scenes, portraits, still lifes and natural scenes. His portraits of children are famous. He is also well known for his mastery of light and attention to detail, most notably in persian rugs and other textiles. He was prolific, producing about 800 paintings, of which roughly 350 survive. He did not have many students but his work proved a source of inspiration for many painters.< Less

Paul Bedjan (1838-1920) was born in Khosrova in Salamas where he was educated at a school established by French Lazarist missionaries. At the age of 18, he went to Paris to join the Lazarist order... More > and further his studies. In 1861 he was ordained a priest in the Roman rite although he was a member of the Chaldean Church. After working among his own people in Iran for 12 years, he returned to Europe to pursue a career in editing and publishing books in Syriac and modern Assyrian. His works were beautifully printed by the famous German printer Wilhelm E. Drugulin in Leipzig. Among the many valuable volumes Bedjan edited, one of the most important is his 7 volume collection of the stories of saints and martyrs. Volume II contains texts about the Assyrian and Persian martyrs under the Sassanians, including Mar Shimun Bar Saba’I, Mar Qardagh, the history of Karka d’ Beth Slokh (Kirkuk) and its martyrs, Mar Pithyon and many others.
