The actual growth rate depends upon adequate blood flow, age, season, exercise level and various hereditary factors. The growth record of the nail can show the history of recent health and physiological imbalances and has been used as a diagnostic tool for other medical conditions. Nails can also be thickened (onychogryphosis), loosened (onycholysis), infected with fungus (onychomycosis) or growing poorly (onychodystrophy). The disadvantages of oral antifungal agents are severe liver toxicity and longer treatment period. Also, medicated nail lacquers have been developed for the treatment of fungal infections i.e. onychomycosis, which have less toxicity.< Less
