There is one ferry record (1813), one bridge record (1888), and very few “canal records” (1813,1901) which were in Box 2 of the road records. Each record contains a photo-image of the original document, and a detailed index (Last, First name) is provided for easy searching. This location usually infers a very small collection, which is certainly true here. However, some counties didn’t preserve any of their records, especially mill records, of which there are two mills included in this book. In addition I located a couple of sheets of papers dealing with clerk fees which document the Ordinary licenses (typically Ordinary bonds are preserved), which is included here – as the old 18th century records. The Road and Bridge records are contained in two folders, dating from 1847 to 1898. The mill folder has two mills both from 1808.< Less

More > Tryon County. Lincoln was reduced in size, when Cleveland County gets part of the western side in 1841. The very next year, 1842, the northern part of the county was removed, forming Catawba County. Four years later, the southern part is removed when Gaston County was formed. There are NO preserved Tryon County records in the State Archives (pertaining to road, bridge, mill, ferry, or ordinary records). Therefore, the older records will require searching in Lincoln County. The bridge records include bridge drawings, and a number of iron bridge drawings, and contracts. The road records (1859-1909) are a general collection of late 19th and early 20th century contents. The mill records are two law suits, one dealing with a dam being raised and flooding, the other details dumping of waste (dye) from a textile mill.< Less
