Perhaps what we have produced is less provocation than affirmation of the obvious. And obvious is our status as “outsiders, but in this capacity we hope to be especially useful. Even if commonplace, our studies may none-the-less prove to be important as new “sparks” toward a promise of Belfast’s “once in a lifetime portent;” and provide a level of design detail that will be important in continuing local dialogue and initiative toward fulfilling the promise of its future.< Less

In December 2011, Vincent Feltesse, President of Bordeaux Agglomeration (CUB) gave a presentation at Columbia University for the opening of the « Mayors Institute on City Design »1 workshops dedicated to sustainable urban design. The two successive speeches of the deputy mayor of the city of New York, Cas Holloway, and CUB President highlighted in a startling shortcut, both the shared convictions on the role of the metropolis in developing new urban policies to face climate change, and the differences of approaches from each side of the Atlantic. Clustered suburban communities within the nodal pathways will experience an increase in growth as demands towards housing options, places of work and recreational venues will need to facilitate the projected increase of 17 million new residences in the Northeast alone. Maplewood New Jersey is an example of a community that would witness such growth patterns. Due to its geographic location and supportive infrastructure such as rail lines, bus networks and education system, smart development strategies need to concur in order to foster and maintain development in a sustainable manner.< Less
