Solar Decathlon 2005: The Event in Review (October 7–16, 2005) By National Renewable Energy Laboratory
Paperback: $17.50
Ships in 3-5 business days.
Two years before the contest, when most of the students joined their respective Solar Decathlon teams, little did they know how daunting the task would be. From the long hours designing and building... More > a house from the ground up, to the demanding requirements necessary to build and occupy a house on the National Mall, competing in the Solar Decathlon is hard. For those with the right stuff, it built character and leadership—qualities that will change their lives for the better. That’s significant. To power a house day after day on sunlight is a technological accomplishment that many find hard to believe—especially in cloudy weather. What the teams proved is that solar energy really works and energy efficiency pays off. Considering the consequences of billions of people around the world burning finite fossil fuels at an ever-increasing rate, demonstrating technologies that can make a difference is significant.< Less

In this 8th adventure, Tom Swift must try to find out what is going on with an inter-galactic phenomena just a short dozen light years away. Astronomers—those who have been allowed to know of... More > the anomaly—are baffled but can't really see it due to Saturn being in their line of sight. So, Tom and a team of ex-astronauts repair and reposition the old Hubble Telescope out past Saturn to get a good look. What everyone sees is the stuff nightmares are made of. It might be a black hole, or something even more disastrous for our solar system, and it is in our solar neighborhood. Using a new technology, Tom and his best friend, Bud Barclay, force their way through a small wormhole and arrive near the anomaly. The big problem is, now that they've arrived and seen what's really going on, they may not be able to get back to Earth to tell anyone. Worst of all, mysterious apparitions appear near the anomaly seemingly beckoning them to fly in.< Less

More > who seem indoctrinated by all the glitter on TV which tells you to keep buying junk you don’t need and keep doing meaningless stuff even if we’re polluting the planet and destroying the atmosphere. I have two power cords, one for my computer and one for the devices near my bed. When I finish using each, I shut the power cord off to totally shut all that electricity off. Meanwhile I have relatives who leave their wireless modems on all the time 24/7. When Ronald Reagan took the American Presidency in 1980, he arrogantly tore the solar panels off the roof of the White House which former President Jimmy Carter put up. If people had real sense, they would have listened to Jimmy Carter. Today, every house in America could have been producing its own electricity with a few solar panels< Less
