Albert Einstein [Germany] (14 March 1879 – 18 April 1955) was a German-born theoretical physicist who developed the general theory of relativity, one of the two pillars of modern physics... More > (alongside quantum mechanics). While best known for his mass–energy equivalence formula E = mc2 which has been dubbed "the world's most famous equation"), he received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics "for his services to theoretical physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect". This book is intended, as far as possible, to give an exact insight into the theory of Relativity to those readers who, from a general scientific and philosophical point of view, are interested in the theory, but who are not conversant with the mathematical apparatus of theoretical physics. The work presumes a standard of education corresponding to that of a university matriculation examination, and, despite the shortness of the book, a fair amount of patience and force of will on the part of the reader.< Less
The Wave Basis of Special Relativity By Robert Close

This book explains how the laws of Special Relativity (SR) arise from the wave nature of matter. First, we show that relatively moving observers who make time and distance measurements using waves... More > will find that their measurements are related by the Lorentz transformations. Second, we use a simple model of matter consisting of waves propagating in circles in order to explain how other physical quantities transform due to relative motion. Our interpretation of SR as a property of wave measurements in Galilean space-time correctly implies that matter should have other wave-like properties. In contrast, the usual interpretation of SR as a geometrical property of space-time is unrelated to the nature of matter. Hence our interpretation is not only simpler, it is also more predictive.< Less

How better to learn the Special Theory of Relativity and the General Theory of Relativity than directly from their creator, Albert Einstein himself? In Relativity: The Special and the General Theory,... More > Einstein describes the theories that made him famous, illuminating his case with numerous examples and a smattering of math (nothing more complex than high-school algebra). Einstein's book is not casual reading, but for those who appreciate his work without diving into the arcana of theoretical physics, Relativity will prove a stimulating read. "The present book is intended," Einstein wrote in 1916, "as far as possible, to give an exact insight into the theory of Relativity to those readers who, from a general scientific and philosophical point of view, are interested in the theory, but who are not conversant with the mathematical apparatus of theoretical physics."< Less

From the PREFACE: ""The present book is intended, as far as possible, to give an exact insight into the theory of Relativity to those readers who, from a general scientific and... More > philosophical point of view, are interested in the theory, but who are not conversant with the mathematical apparatus of theoretical physics. The work presumes a standard of education corresponding to that of a university matriculation examination, and, despite the shortness of the book, a fair amount of patience and force of will on the part of the reader. The author has spared himself no pains in his endeavour to present the main ideas in the simplest and most intelligible form, and on the whole, in the sequence and connection in which they actually originated. In the interest of clearness, it appeared to me inevitable that I should repeat myself frequently, without paying the slightest attention to the elegance of the presentation." -Albert Einstein< Less
