After martial law was lifted in Taiwan, it was Hou’s City of Sadness, which became the bedrock of the so-called ‘Taiwan New Cinema’ movement. During the New Cinema period a film industry with unique characteristics has been developed on the island: one that clearly reflects Taiwanese identity, politics and society. Since the New Cinema movement, Taiwanese society has undergone new, rapid changes. This paper compares New Cinema movies on a thematic level with more recent movies of Taiwanese directors. By exploring the relationship between the island’s cinema and the role it has been playing in its society, this paper attempts to reconcile thematic trends of Taiwanese film with the reality of everyday life in contemporary Taiwan.< Less
