Old Tassie Tales By Jakkie Trickadoodle

Jakkie Trickadoodle says... I have decided to put into words a lot of the stories my grandfather told me. My father also told me a few, but the first one is from my mother; something that happened... More > when she was a little girl. This is, as is most of what I put in this book, a true story. The tales that are tallest are leg-pulls and jokes, and I’ve tagged these as I went along. They’re included along with the true tales because jokes and leg-pulls are fun, and part of the old Tassie character.< Less

The Aborigines of Western Australia by Albert F. Calvert. ANY attempt to fathom the depth of mystery which surrounds the history of the Australian Aboriginal must necessarily be--in the main--a... More > failure. The subject is surrounded with difficulty. Captain Dampier was the first Englishman known to have made the acquaintance of the Australian natives, whom he calls "the poor winking people of New Holland, the miserablest people on earth," and so forth. During the intervening two centuries we have not added much to our knowledge regarding them. They have no written language, and are forbidden to speak of the dead: two serious obstacles to research. During my wanderings in Western Australia, in the capacity of a mining engineer, I came across a good many of the natives; and taking a profound interest in everything connected with the colony I resolved to set down in brief and simple form such facts...< Less

He committed the worst mass murder not only in Australia, but in the history of the world. He achieved what he set out to do: surpass Thomas Hamilton's record set at Dunblane. Martin Bryant was a... More > man-child, and he hunted down and killed men, women and little children with all the cold-hearted cruelty of the killer he emulated. Predictably, Australian Prime Minister John Howard, acted in the very same way the UK leaders had: he introduced strict gun control immediately following the tragedy. Military style hardware was removed from the hands of the ordinary citizen. These regulations, and the buy-back scheme for guns right across the country were applauded by both sides of the Houses of Parliament. This is a forensic numerological criminal profile of Martin John Bryant, who was imprisoned, never to be released for his slaughter of innocents at Port Arthur Tasmania, an historic convict settlement. Bryant had chosen the site because of its cruel history. It suited, "because I heard bad things happened there."< Less

I first met Dennis Chadwick when he owned the Blue Waters Hotel, at Orford. My wife and I and our friends were regulars at ‘The Bluey’ as it was called with some affection. Dennis too,... More > was unlike many hoteliers in that many of his patrons developed an affection for a man who worked the pub astutely with his wife, Sid. During his tenure as the owner, his wife became ill and the pub was sold. Dennis took her across the world and lost her in England. He returned to Orford for a short while before leaving for all time. It was after his return that he approached me about his memoirs. He had first-drafted them simply to leave a record of his footprint, his own uneventful journey, as he refers to it in the final paragraphs of this memoir. It becomes an important record of his early days in Hobart and other parts of Tasmania; growing up and growing away from family, in pre and post WWII, eventually coming to Orford and like most publicans becoming the central character to pub-based socializing.< Less

More > 1840-1, and completed in July of the latter year, some apology may be deemed necessary for this narrative not having sooner appeared, or perhaps even for its being now published at all. With respect to the first, the author would remark that soon after his return to South Australia upon the close of the Expeditions, and when contemplating an immediate return to England, he was invited by the Governor of the Colony to remain, and undertake the task of re-establishing peace and amicable relations with the numerous native tribes of the Murray River, and its neighbourhood, whose daring and successful outrages in 1841, had caused very great losses to, and created serious apprehensions among the Colonists.< Less
