She is a member of the Solomon Barrow Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic, Baytown, Texas, and a charter member of the "Descendants of Austin's Old Three Hundred Colonists." Another ancestor, Stephen Jefferson Stanley, settled in Zavala, Texas in 1828 with Lorenzo De Zavala's Colony. Keels was born in Zavala, not far from where her ancestors settled.
