Dueling with Dualism the forlorn quest for the immaterial mind By Michael Spenard
eBook (PDF): $5.99
Dueling with Dualism takes up the commonplace understanding of man’s mind as having a distinct mode of existence outside of physical space and corporeal bodies: the infamous notion of... More > “mind-body duality.” In this brisk and lucid work Spenard lays forth a historical account and cumulative critique against the intuitive conception of the mind, as separate from the brain, by bearing out fully the consequences and implications of this notion. In challenging the reader from the opening—“What is it that your name names?”—Dueling with Dualism gives to the reader what all philosophy should: a renewed interest in how we conceive of ourselves by looking to the ideas of past, reconciling them with the present and pointing to a future “conceptual topography.”< Less

Go where you may within the bounds of California, mountains are ever in sight, charming and glorifying every landscape. Yet so simple and massive is the topography of the State in general views, that... More > the main central portion displays only one valley, and two chains of mountains which seem almost perfectly regular in trend and height: the Coast Range on the west side, the Sierra Nevada on the east. These two ranges coming together in curves on the north and south inclose a magnificent basin, with a level floor more than 400 miles long, and from 35 to 60 miles wide. This is the grand Central Valley of California, the waters of which have only one outlet to the sea through the Golden Gate. But with this general simplicity of features there is great complexity of hidden detail.< Less

This doctoral project explores the topography of stepfamily relationships through the prism of the mother, a view as yet rarely explored. Recorded interviews of eleven mothers were examined using... More > narrative, phenomenological, grounded theory methods, within a Gestalt theoretical framework and refined into first person narratives of their experience as mothers and stepmothers. The findings indicate that while many social scientists reject biological determinism within stepfamily dynamics, an acceptance of evolutionary theory opens out the analysis to provide greater understanding of the stepfamily landscape. Further, the study shows that some features of stepfamily dynamics have similarities to the workings of psychotherapeutic groups, and vice versa. Therefore stepfamily situations can be a useful metaphor for therapy group interventions and the possibility exists to develop this further as an addition to the existing knowledge of group dynamics.< Less

For fans of Thomas Ligotti... Lew has always been consumed by an overwhelming unease when he looks at the Kessel Management building. eBook (PDF): $0.00
The Pacific Northwest and Alaska share interconnected transportation systems. Weather affects these networks, yet climate change impacts are poorly understood. Scientists confirm that climate... More > changes will continue. Diverse topography and local variability complicate efforts to adapt to climate change. High infrastructure costs pressure planners and policy makers to deliver resilient and cost-effective systems. Changing weather impacts all aspects of transportation, yet many practices were developed without considering climate change. For example, more frequent and intense precipitation and floods may lead to failures of roads and bridges designed with old hydrologic data. Such damage may be avoided with current data and design. Socioeconomic changes are likely, but planners are ill-equipped to analyze them. Today’s decisions impact the resiliency of the system as we adapt to climate change. Making well informed decisions now can minimize costly modifications and disruptions.< Less
