Memories are built from moments: some magical, some tedious, some humorous and some frustrating. Our four years living in Istanbul, Turkey between August 2000 and June 2004 was the most memorable... More > time of my life. We arrived in Turkey as wide-eyed tourists and left as Turkish ambassadors. Our daily experiences living in a city of 15 million Muslims comprised a never-ending litany of adventures and encounters. We learned to speak some functional Turkish and were able to travel within the city and throughout the country without fear or trepidation. The places we saw, the people we met, and the memories we have, are unforgettable. During our stay I tried to capture some of the daily or unusual events that impacted our lives. Almost every essay is a tribute in some way to the wonderful country and its people. I purposely did not change any of the information that is currently out of date, but left it as I wrote it in order to reflect my specific memory at that time.< Less

The history of Canadian Muslims is an unnoticed part of our history. The Islamic heritage does not belong only to Canadian Muslims; it belongs to all Canadians. For more than 1,400 years, the... More > contributors to Islamic civilization were of different ethnic backgrounds, including African, Asian, European and North American. They were numerous men and women who were often adherents of different faiths; most would never even have known that they were helping to make history. Many of their names and accomplishments have faded with the passage of time, but their collective story has not been forgotten. Today, it would seem that the civilizations of East and West, or the Muslim and non-Muslim world, have become reversed. But perhaps it is more a case of having forgotten those former glories in the pursuit of present-day materialism and political agendas. Today, Turkish Muslims are promoting peace, harmony, inter-faith dialog, intercultural understanding, and social justice to our multicultural society at large.< Less

Magnificent castles and legendary heroes from the age of Hungarian-Turkish wars. Europe was torn by religious and dynastic wars in the 16th century while the mighty Ottoman Empire was getting ready... More > to conquer the countries of the Christian world. The Hungarians had contributed vastly more than their share to the steady development of the European civilization in this time. The Hungarian-Ottoman War Series aims to make this age more popular in the English language. Let us meet and pay tribute to the generations of long-forgotten heroes. In this book, I have chosen thirty-three castles from those which used to guard the northern part of the Hungarian Kingdom against the Ottoman Empire. I described the history of these castles from the beginning until the 18th century and added a particular legend or battle, a siege that can be associated with the place. The legends and the battles were written as short history-fiction stories, based on the traceable facts.< Less
