In 1969 Robert Smithson took a trip down to Mexico to experience its ancient architecture. In a lecture three years later he presented his experience to the faculty of the University of Utah. While... More > showing slides of architecture partly in ruin, he talked about the Hotel Palenque. Through his presentation he turns the hotel into a contemporary ruin where empirical truths and permanent histories are lost. “Cellar in the Attic” shows a series of photographs documenting interior doors, windows, and staircases. Displayed in the palm of a man there is the possibility of reading the sequential images as an implied narrative. The written story, highly influenced by Robert Smithson’s writing, introduces yet another possible read to the project. “The state that the whole hotel was left in evokes a certain sense of time. It is progressing and backtracking with equal force and slowness. Through numerous excursions I have been able to trace this phenomenon. My conclusion being that it pervades the entire structure.“< Less
