Fidelia Fiske was one of the earliest and most influential members of the American Mission to the Assyrians of Urmia. Fiske was born in 1816 and graduated from Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, the... More > first women’s college in the United States, in 1842. Although she suffered from poor health, she desired to become a missionary and arrived at Urmia in 1843. By October of 1843 she had founded a boarding school for girls in Urmia which later became known as Fiske Seminary. This was the first school for women established in Persia and it continued to function until the mass exodus of the Assyrians from Urmia in 1918. Failing health prompted Fiske to return to the United States in 1858 where she took up teaching at Mount Holyoke, her alma mater. She died in 1864. In spite of a certain amount of exaggeration typical of the accounts of the American Missionaries, this book provides many important details concerning the conditions of life of Assyrian women at the time.< Less

Joseph P. Cochran was the son of Rev. Joseph Gallop Cochran, one of the early members of the American Mission to the Assyrians. He was born in Urmia on January 14, 1855. He returned to the United... More > States in 1868 to pursue a medical education. After completing his studies and marrying, he returned to Urmia in 1878 to join the mission as a physician. He persuaded the mission to purchase land for a 100 bed hospital and was able to get funding for the project from the United States. In 1880 the Westminster Hospital in Urmia was opened. The need for more doctors prompted Dr. Cochran to found a Medical College that was attached to the hospital. This was the first Medical College established in Iran. Joseph P. Cochran served Assyrians in many other capacities in addition to his medical work. He died of typhoid fever on August 18, 1905 and is buried in the mission cemetery in Seir. This extensive biography provides many details of his selfless devotion to the Assyrians.< Less

After eight years in the mission, Perkins returned to the United States for a leave and wrote a detailed account of his experiences which was published in 1843 under the title “A Residence of Eight Years in Persia among the Nestorian Christians”. On this first leave, he brought with him Mar Yohannan, one of the Assyrian bishops of Urmia. This is the first well documented account of the visit of any Assyrian to the United States. Perkins served in Urmia until August 1869. He died on December 31st, 1869.< Less
