James M. Palmer served Hillsborough, NC, for over 25 years in various roles: hotel proprietor, merchant, postmaster, town commissioner and mayor. His wife, Sophia M. Lutterloh Palmer, was a... More > daughter of Brigadier General Charles Lutterloh and Eliza Comerford Lutterloh of Chatham County, NC. Their Hillsborough home, built in the Williamsburg style, is on the historical register and still serves as a private residence today. By 1860, James accepted a postal position in Goldsboro, NC, and the family relocated there. Soon afterwards, Goldboro became a Civil War battlefield and Jame died during that war. Sophia would later live in Virginia after her daughter married a celebrated civil engineer, Virginius Freeman of Norfolk, VA.< Less
