Making art and making an art career are two different things. A professional artist is responsible for the day-to-day business of their career such as financial management, applying for grants and... More > funding, documenting work marketing, promotion, researching opportunities, and a list of other tasks. These areas are not always covered within the education system so, while highly educated and skilled, many visual artists are not prepared for the reality of life after art college. As an artist led organisation Visual Artists Ireland is keenly aware that artists are pressed for time, trying to fit their art making into daily lives that juggle family, work and other commitments. We hope this manual will provide you with some of the tools to make the most of the opportunities that come your way, whether it be pursuing a post graduate course, getting a studio, entering juried exhibitions, initiating your own projects or getting representation through a gallery.< Less

Artists: Allie Coposky, Andria Floyd, Blythe Brooklyn Baird, Elijah Gordon, Faryal S, Haley Hendrick, Ian Wissler, Julian Johnson, Madlyn Regimbal, Maggie McClosky, Markiwi, Nikai Morales, Rachel... More > Tallant, Tahiid Ghee, Tiffany Jewel Horne and William Jamison. I started this project in July, 2014, thinking it would be a simple, little, maybe twenty page booklet, with the work of a few of my favorite local unpublished artists. The mission of Unpublished was to fuse different points of view, backgrounds, visual art, and writing styles. From cartoon to realism, writing about love to death, the product of all of our work exceeded this goal. Thank you to everyone that’s helped us create this book. Special thanks to my teachers and mentors at school, Dr. Elizabeth Abell and Mr. John Rykaczewski, who answered millions of my annoying questions.< Less

Visual artists in Ireland today are thriving in terms of creative output. However, these visual artists also represent some of the lowest paid members of society. They undertake their career as a... More > visual artist against all odds – and at times feel alienated from a society that gains its cultural identity from their life’s work; yet they continue to succeed to make work. Visual Artists Ireland carried out a survey in December 2008 entitled The Social, Economic and Fiscal Status of the Visual Artist in Ireland. As can be seen artists see the strength of work of the Arts Council of Ireland, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Culture Ireland, the British Council, and local arts offices in their support of the visual arts. But their limited funding can go only so far as the call on their resources becomes more and more stretched. We hope this report can assist them in their lobbying.< Less
