Julian Alden Weir was an American impressionist painter, one of the founding members of "The Ten", a group of American artists dissatisfied with professional art organizations, who banded... More > together in 1898 to exhibit their works. He received his first art training at the National Academy of Design before enrolling at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1873. Upon his return to New York City in 1877, Weir became a charter member of the Society of American Artists and continued exhibiting his work at the National Academy of Design. His works as a young artist centered on still life and the human figure, which he rendered in a realist style not unlike the work of Édouard Manet. By 1891 Weir had reconciled his earlier misgivings about impressionism and adopted the style as his own. His work demonstrated a tendency for a lighter palette of pastel colors and broken brushwork similar to the Impressionists. During the remainder of his life Weir painted impressionist landscapes and figurative works.< Less
