Other family members, to this day, serve with distinction within their communities. The history and heritage of the African American Petteway family is strong and respected. The Edney Chapel school house is the only remaining all African American left still standing within Onslow County, North Carolina. The original church was destroyed in the early 60s after a Hurricane fell a large tree.
