Ideas, Inventions and Insanity By Peter Cook
eBook (ePub): $2.00
When an Inventor decides to invent something he generally doesn’t know what it is he is going to create, unless of course he has already been inspired by an idea or a brain wave. Firstly he... More > will try to think of something which everybody needs but hasn’t yet been thought of, this can be difficult and generally results in either a crazy device which nobody wants or something which quite simply is a brilliant idea but doesn’t work. Another approach is to think of something that doesn’t exist and think of a way to make it work, a good example of this is an invisibility cloak, it works but nobody knows how; other than the inventor. The inventor can think big and dream up something which has been deemed impossible and may even contradict all the laws of science, so he decides to do it. This latter approach is by far the best and most exciting option and is no doubt a challenge which starts to pump the adrenalin for any committed inventor. He will make it possible and make it happen.< Less

War and Peat By Ian D. Rotherham & Christine Handley
Paperback: $92.16
Prints in 3-5 business days
The themes of this book were addressed at a major international conference in 2013, and the expanded papers are presented here as chapters with an introduction by Ian D. Rotherham. The papers are... More > grouped around several themes: Military Landscapes; Battles and Battlefields; The Impacts of Conflict and War; War & Peat in the Peak District (UK National Park); and Non-military Campaigns. They are mostly focused on temperate environments, but the interactions of peatlands and conflicts are more global and wetlands have been hugely influential in tropical conflicts too. As we approach the centenary of the Great War (WW1), matters of landscape, terrain, resources and strategies become increasingly topical and relevant. The relationships of people and landscapes, of economies and conflicts, and ecology and history, are complex and multi-faceted. For peatlands, including bogs, fens, moors, and heaths, the interactions of people and nature in relation to history and conflicts, are both significant and surprising.< Less
