More > to understand how this relationship functions as the conceptual realm of 'representations' and their mediations are not just involved with the development of spaces, but also with the social practices that occur in space. By combining the socio-spatial theory of Henri Lefebvre with the media and spatial theories of Marshall McLuhan, a surprising opportunity for cultural analysis is proposed. A concept of 'paraspace' is theorized that helps to clarify the changing dynamics of the relationship between the perceived and lived space, both in the age of traditional media and today's digital networked media. The working hypothesis is tested on two construction phases of the Amsterdam Metro Line showing how the social impact of spatial schemes can be linked to perceptions of space through media representations.< Less
