More > hundred other accomplishments, truly a 19th-Century Western Man in the best sense of the term. This book is a republishing of a valuable work from 1898, "The Jew, the Gypsy and El Islam", and consists of three extended essays that Burton had been working on for many years prior to his death. The essay “The Gypsy” is a good exposition of a people that are nearly invisible, their machinations going mostly undetected. The details featured in “El Islam” are of obvious topical interest today. The real treat is “The Jew” which is herein reproduced exactly as published in 1898, however as such reflects barely one-quarter of the original manuscript which is now kept under lock and key in the archives of the Board of Deputies of British Jews.
