About the Book "Clarissa Harlowe," written after "Pamela," brought Richardson a European reputation. Dr. Johnson said that the novel "enlarged the knowledge of human nature."< Less

The Thirty-Nine Steps By John Buchan
eBook (ePub): $2.99
I returned from the City about three o'clock on that May afternoon pretty well disgusted with life. I had been three months in the Old Country, and was fed up with it. If anyone had told me a year... More > ago that I would have been feeling like that I should have laughed at him; but there was the fact. The weather made me liverish, the talk of the ordinary Englishman made me sick. I couldn't get enough exercise, and the amusements of London seemed as flat as soda-water that has been standing in the sun. 'Richard Hannay,' I kept telling myself, 'you have got into the wrong ditch, my friend, and you had better climb out.' It made me bite my lips to think of the plans I had been building up those last years in Bulawayo. I had got my pile—not one of the big ones, but good enough for me; and I had figured out all kinds of ways of enjoying myself. My father had brought me out from Scotland at the age of six, and I had never been home since; so England was a sort of Arabian Nights to me, ...< Less

Sir Richard F. Burton (1821–1890) was one of the most important linguists of his day, giving a well-received direct-from-Arabic English translation of the "Arabian Nights" and a... More > hundred other accomplishments, truly a 19th-Century Western Man in the best sense of the term. This book is a republishing of a valuable work from 1898, "The Jew, the Gypsy and El Islam", and consists of three extended essays that Burton had been working on for many years prior to his death. The essay “The Gypsy” is a good exposition of a people that are nearly invisible, their machinations going mostly undetected. The details featured in “El Islam” are of obvious topical interest today. The real treat is “The Jew” which is herein reproduced exactly as published in 1898, however as such reflects barely one-quarter of the original manuscript which is now kept under lock and key in the archives of the Board of Deputies of British Jews. The story of how the Jews accomplished “obtaining” the manuscript is told in the Foreword.< Less
