William Paley (1743 -1805) was a British divine, Christian apologist, utilitarian, and philosopher. He is best remembered for his watchmaker analogy, an argument for the existence of God in his book... More > Natural Theology (1802). The Evidences of Christianity (1794) is mainly a condensation of Bishop Douglas's Criterion and Lardner's Credibility of the Gospel History. But the task is so judiciously performed that it would probably be difficult to get a more effective statement of the external evidences of Christianity than Paley has here presented. His idea of revelation depends upon the same mechanical conception of the relation of God to the world which dominates his Natural Theology. In Evidence of Christianity, Paley argues for the truth of Christianity by providing his readers with evidence in favor of the Bible's authenticity and the existence of God and miracles. Paley... More > considers many historical and biblical factors, such as the legitimacy of ancient Jewish prophecy, the fulfillment of prophecies in the New Testament, and the early propagation of Christianity during the first century. One way that Paley argues for the authenticity of the Bible is by citing the significant overlap that is observed in the individual accounts of Christ found in the New Testament. He presents several sides of every issue and resolves disputes by appealing to the strongest body of evidence. As Paley was an influential philosopher, many of the points in this book directly respond to the work of other philosophers of his time. Paley's book does an excellent job of piecing together the facts which form the foundation of the Christian faith. -Emmalon Davis, CCEL Staff Writer< Less
