Revisiting the Scene: Studies in the Sherlockian "Game" By Community High School
Paperback: $3.23
Prints in 3-5 business days
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories not only helped develop the genre of Detective Fiction, but also inspired some of the first examples of what has come to be known as Fan-Fiction.... More > Those who practice it call it The Sherlockian Game. Much of it takes the form of fan-fic essays, in which real-life research into Victorian & Edwardian England is used to comment on, explain, and sometimes to “disprove” Holmes' cases and conclusions. Plot-holes, logical jumps, and inacurate details all become material for a complex logical game. The result is a dizzying, enjoyable, and strangely-scholarly mixture of “history” with “fiction,” of “scholarship” with “creative writing.” Students have tried their own hand at playing the Sherlockian Game. Some re-opened Holmes' cases and questioned his conclusions; others delved into his biography & personality. In revisiting the scene of his crimes, they shed light on the society of late Victorian England, logic and storytelling, and the line between history & fiction.< Less
