This book is about predictive analytics. Yet, each chapter could easily be handled by an entire volume of its own. So one might think of this a survey of predictive modeling. A predictive model is a... More > statistical model or machine learning model used to predict future behavior based on past behavior. In order to use this book, one should have a basic understanding of mathematical statistics — it is an advanced book. Some theoretical foundations are laid out but not proven, but references are provided for additional coverage. Every chapter culminates in an example using R. R is a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics. You may download R, from a preferred CRAN mirror at http://www.r-project.org/. The book is organized so that statistical models are presented first (hopefully in a logical order), followed by machine learning models, and then applications: uplift modeling and time series. One could use this a textbook with problem solving in R—but there are no “by-hand” exercises.< Less

THE TIMES THEY ARE A-ENDING but then again maybe not By appleton schneider

My challenge to the Millenarians (evangelical "end-times-coming-ers") to look at proof, not prophecy. Plagues and pestilences, even wars and massacres, have decreased. Hardly signs of the... More > (Biblical) end times. Volcanoes and tsunamis there have always been. So much that seems worse now is only due to the instantaneous worldwide media coverage. A major quandry -- why would an omniscient God's creation be so flawed that He must destroy all but a fraction of a fraction of his "special creation", man? Man's free will? Were not the "menu of free-will options" created by God? Or is Satan really the superior and God only the punisher? Too much that seems the fundamentalist presentation. The only real threat to man's existence (possibly even survival) is environmental and ecological ("the sixth extinction") plus global warming. But even as causes of these phenomena the end-times-ers focus on gays, prayerless schools as the causes. I've examined the realities.< Less
My Charger's Name Was Pegasus: The World War 2 Memoir of a Cavalryman Turned Intelligence Agent By Charles von Bernuth
eBook (ePub): $2.99
(1 Ratings)
Merriam Press World War 2 Memoir Series. Before the war Charlie was a member of a National Guard cavalry unit. In 1942 he enlisted at Fort Riley, where they were still training horse units. Two years... More > later Charlie was recruited by the OSS. After training, Charlie shipped out in July 1944 for England. After training as a spy, in late 1944 he went to France in an OSS section attached to Seventh Army. The last half of the book details his experiences recruiting locals as agents to perform intelligence missions, often going behind German lines. During one such mission, things go wrong and Charlie's actions result in his receiving a Silver Star. He was among those who went into Dachau after the camp was liberated. Charlie's job was to locate certain individuals among the prisoners who had been recruited by the OSS as spies and had fallen into enemy hands, and to get them back. Charlie's memoir covers two topics—cavalry and the OSS—that have seen little coverage in WW2 memoirs. 13 photos.< Less
