Manuals of Systemic Architecture - cyber-Garden v4.0 By ecoLogic Studio

The cyber-Garden project embodies a cybernetic and machinic paradigm within the framework of a large 1:200 scale architectural model. Such attempt to combine languages and methods has a strong... More > contemporary relevance. The ecologic and sustainable design ethos has become central to any architectural discourse but it’s still seeking more radical solutions to an accepted list of problematic questions. The project tests a design method centered on interbreeding architectural design with social sciences, ecology and cybernetics: the designer here facilitates communication between diverse and heterogeneous systems and ecologic regimes. Flows of light and nutrients, human care and physical contact or ecological stress analysis are allowed to contribute to the growth and evolution of an augmented architectural model, a 1:200 representation of a cyber-garden city.< Less
System Design, Modeling, and Simulation using Ptolemy II By Claudius Ptolemaeus
Paperback: $35.00
Ships in 3-5 business days
This book is a definitive introduction to models of computation for the design of complex, heterogeneous systems. It has a particular focus on cyber-physical systems, which integrate computing,... More > networking, and physical dynamics. The book captures more than twenty years of experience in the Ptolemy Project at UC Berkeley, which pioneered many design, modeling, and simulation techniques that are now in widespread use. All of the methods covered in the book are realized in the open source Ptolemy II modeling framework and are available for experimentation through links provided in the book. The book is suitable for engineers, scientists, researchers, and managers who wish to understand the rich possibilities offered by modern modeling techniques. The goal of the book is to equip the reader with a breadth of experience that will help in understanding the role that such techniques can play in design.< Less

Context-Aware Assistive Systems for Augmented Work. A Framework Using Gamification and Projection By Oliver Korn
Paperback: $74.07
Ships in 3-5 business days
While context-aware assistive systems (CAAS) have become ubiquitous in cars or smartphones, most workers in production environments still rely on their skills to make the right choices and movements.... More > However, with today’s motion recognition systems and projectors the technical pre-requisites for CAAS principally have been established. Impaired and elderly persons with reduced physical and mental capabilities require CAAS the most: these systems have the potential to empower them to do more complex work or to remain in regular jobs longer. Thus they combine economic benefits with inclusion and address the demographic change. We establish a model for CAAS and describe an exemplary implementation. As the framework aims to improve not both work results and the workers’ motivation, it incorporates elements from game design. The effects of the augmented system are evaluated. An additional focus lies on the ethical implications of systems supervising and modelling their users in real-time.< Less

Cyberterrorism After Stuxnet By Strategic Studies Institute, Thomas M. Chen, U.S. Army War College

Public government statements have cited cyberattacks by terrorists as a major concern for national security. To date, no large-scale cyber-terrorist attack has been observed, but terrorists are known... More > to be using the Internet for various routine purposes. The discovery of Stuxnet in 2010 was a milestone in the arena of cybersecurity because, although a malware attack on industrial control systems was long believed to be theoretically possible, it was different to see malware used in reality to cause real physical damage. Stuxnet demonstrated that a sufficiently determined adversary with sufficient resources might be able to damage U.S. critical infrastructure physically through a cyber attack. Did Stuxnet change the threat of cyberterrorism?< Less
