This book addresses a missing piece of the public conversations about ethics and digital media. The chapters in this book were written by college students at the University of Texas in a course... More > called Ethics and New Media, offered in spring of 2015 and taught by Peg Syverson. The chapters reflect the students’ deep inquiry through research on their peers, reading, online discussion, and editorial work. In its chapters, college students report their research on the ethical dilemmas faced by their peers. The results are provocative, wide-ranging, and surprising. They raise further questions about how we can continue to include the voices of those most affected by new media in our public discussions about ethics, internet regulation, appropriate use of technology by children, and wise guidance from parents, spiritual leaders, and teachers.< Less

Sydney Blumenthal - The World's First Digital Human By R J Zargle
Paperback: $14.49

This story is a bizarre adventure in neuroscience. It describes a small group of scientists and friends working in Oxford who, because of an accident, are forced to embrace the principle of... More > self-experimentation. The consequences of their actions are not only unforeseen but quite unprecedented in the world of biological science – especially when they digitalise the entire conscious personality of Sydney Blumenthal, a leading member of the group. As the story unfolds it tries – I hope in an entertaining way – to explore the tantalising cross-over between computer science, genetics and medical science, together with all the strange, legal and ethical ramifications this cross-over creates. It is this potent, fertile mixture of disciplines which, in many ways, is already defining the future of medicine. However, I have no doubt that the medical wonders that will in fact come to define the future, will far outstrip the scope of this story.< Less

Context-Aware Assistive Systems for Augmented Work. A Framework Using Gamification and Projection By Oliver Korn
Paperback: $74.07
Prints in 3-5 business days
While context-aware assistive systems (CAAS) have become ubiquitous in cars or smartphones, most workers in production environments still rely on their skills to make the right choices and movements.... More > However, with today’s motion recognition systems and projectors the technical pre-requisites for CAAS principally have been established. Impaired and elderly persons with reduced physical and mental capabilities require CAAS the most: these systems have the potential to empower them to do more complex work or to remain in regular jobs longer. Thus they combine economic benefits with inclusion and address the demographic change. We establish a model for CAAS and describe an exemplary implementation. As the framework aims to improve not both work results and the workers’ motivation, it incorporates elements from game design. The effects of the augmented system are evaluated. An additional focus lies on the ethical implications of systems supervising and modelling their users in real-time.< Less

Rethinking School Leadership - Creating Great Schools for All Students By J-C Couture & Stephen Murgatroyd
Paperback: $20.00

We began, prompted by the late Chris Gonnet, Superintendent of Grande Prairie Public Schools, to explore the question 'What Makes a Great School?'in December 2010 at a meeting in Boston. We concluded... More > that it involved many inter-connected elements, but that the key components were focused teacher leadership enabled by being empowered and resourced to make a difference. Rethinking Leadership sees evidence-informed practice as the fulcrum point for leveraging school improvement, especially if it systematically supported within a systematic way at the jurisdiction and provincial levels to build school leadership capacity. We also concluded that the framing conditions for the work of the school – the provincial/ state policies, curriculum requirements, financial arrangements, assessment regimes as well as the policies of school boards and districts – either enables or impairs the ability of a team within the school to create a great school for all students.< Less
