It is not possible to travel the route they took these days, due to the wars and unrest in the Middle East. This tale is partly a nostalgic reminder and partly a description of how they coped with day to day emergencies, the people they met along the way and the places they visited. More > weather and precipitation patterns, the MENA region may experience even more water shortage in the near future. The study explores for the 21 MENA countries how water demand, supply and shortage will change over the coming 40 years. The study explores also alternatives to overcome the projected water shortages. Results indicate that unmet demand for the entire MENA region, expressed as percentage of total demand, will increase from 16% currently to 51% in 2040-2050. Various adaptation strategies were explored resulting in the conclusion that costs to overcome water shortage in 2040-2050 will be about US$ 100 billion every year. The study will contribute to the World Bank Flagship Report and is considered as the most reliable study of water shortage and policy directions for the MENA region.< Less
