Founded in 1986 by Victoria Goss, Last Chance rescues an average of 50 horses... More > each year. On top of that, each winter they rescue an average of 150 foals. These are specifically called nurse mare foals. They are born so their mother will come into milk in order to nurse a more valuable baby, generally for the thoroughbred racing industry. The mother’s milk is the desired product, making the foal a by-product. The babies are usually sold for slaughter. Victoria and her crew save these foals who have never been given a chance at life.
