As part of each show, Tesla stood in the middle of the stage, using his 6' 6" height, with an assistant on either side, each 7 feet away. All 3 men wore thick cork or rubber shoe soles to avoid being electrically grounded. Each assistant held a wire, part of a high voltage, low current circuit. When Tesla raised his arms to each side, violet colored electricity jumped harmlessly across the gaps between the men. At high voltage and frequency in this arrangement, electricity flows over a surface, even the skin, rather than into it. This is a basic circuit which could be used by aircraft / spacecraft.< Less

This study examines the impacts of multimodal transportation on local businesses. Analysis of travel choices and consumer spending shows important differences in the average amounts spent by travel... More > mode. Bicyclists, pedestrians and transit riders are competitive consumers. Mode choice does not significantly impact consumer spending at establishments surveyed when we consider demographics and socioeconomics. When controlling for trip frequency, average monthly expenditures by mode reveal that bicyclists, transit users and pedestrians are competitive consumers and, for all businesses except supermarkets, spend more on average than those who drive. Residential and employment density, proximity to rail transit, and the amount of car and bicycle parking are all important in explaining the use of non-automobile modes. Bike parking and bike corrals are significant predictors of bike mode share at an establishment.< Less

This research sought to evaluate the safety implications of advisory speeds at horizontal curves on Oregon rural two-lane highways. The goal of this research is to characterize driving at such curves... More > with advisory speed signs, and to determine what role the signs play in enhancing safety. Speed and signage compliance data was collected at 16 sites. Site crash data and an examination of how advisory speed relates to historic crash information are included with a statistical model that identifies critical variables associated with the posted speed and how they relate to the expected crash frequency. An advisory speed model was developed to assess predicted crash outcomes based on geometric design, operations, and signage. The resulting model was compared to advisory speeds based on Oregon policy and 2009 MUTCD thresholds. The safety-based model predicted advisory speeds that are less conservative than those recommended by the ball-bank thresholds in the 2009 MUTCD or the thresholds Oregon has been using.< Less
