Though orphaned at the age of fourteen, he chose to follow in his father’s footsteps becoming an Orthodox Rabbi. In 1824 he published Predigten fur fromme Israeliten (“Sermons for Pious Israelites”). At about this same time he came to the conclusion that Yeshua was the Messiah and began teaching from the “New Testament” to his congregation. He soon found himself subject to much persecution. He eventually left the synagogue, and having nowhere else to go, he went over to Christianity and became a Lecturer in Hebrew at Oxford University.
