Structure and Inference in Classical Planning By Nir Lipovetzky

Classical planning is the problem of finding a sequence of actions for achieving a goal from an initial state assuming that actions have deterministic effects. The most effective approach for... More > finding such plans is based on heuristic search guided by heuristics extracted automatically from the problem representation. In this thesis, we introduce alternative approaches for performing inference over the structure of planning problems that do not appeal to heuristic functions, nor to reductions to other formalisms such as SAT or CSP. We show that many of the standard benchmark domains can be solved with almost no search or a polynomially bounded amount of search, once the structure of planning problems is taken into account. In certain cases we can characterize this structure in terms of a novel width parameter for classical planning.< Less

Orthology Inference: Methods, Benchmarking and Applications By Adrian Altenhoff
Paperback: $38.99

PhD Thesis of Adrian Altenhoff on the topic of Orthology Inference. ETH Thesis Nr. 20636 accepted on the recommendation of Prof. Dr. Gaston H. Gonnet, Prof. Dr. Paul Thomas, Prof. Dr. Marc... More > Robinson-Rechavi and Dr. Christophe Dessimoz. Orthologs are genes that started diverging through a speciation event; they are "the same genes in different species." Detecting the orthologs is an important prerequisite for many comparative genomics studies including species evolution and protein function prediction. This thesis revolves around problems to computationally infer orthologs: In the first part, I present a novel method to infer hierarchical orthologous groups followed by a contribution on how to benchmark orthology predictions based on real biological data. The second part of this thesis consists of different applications of orthology.< Less
