More > knowledge and a poetic gesture towards the inhuman scale of big data. Michael Mandberg wrote software that parses the entirety of the English-language Wikipedia database and programmatically lays out nearly 7500 volumes, complete with covers, and then uploads them to Lulu.com for print-on-demand. Print Wikipedia draws attention to the sheer size of the encyclopedia's content and the impossibility of rendering Wikipedia as a material object in fixed form: Once a volume is printed it is already out of date. It is also a work of found poetry built on what is likely the largest appropriation ever made. As we become increasingly more dependent on information and source material on the Internet today, Mandiberg explores the accessibility of its vastness.< Less

The United States' Program for Agriculture in Post-Invasion Iraq By Sam Beer
eBook (ePub): $9.99
In the wake of the invasion of Iraq in 2003, the United States embarked on the massive project of rebuilding and transforming the agricultural sector in that country. This program was as... More > controversial as the invasion itself, being variously portrayed as the hands-on altruism of Farm Belt army reservists or the neocolonial subjugation of Iraqi farmers to American corporations. Agricultural “development” in Iraq (and simultaneously, in Afghanistan) was conducted differently than previous such projects—largely by contractors rather than USAID employees, and in close coordination with the occupying military forces. While a popular opinion has emerged against the invasion itself, there has been little retrospective discussion about the goals or methods of agricultural aid in Iraq. With close examination of the changes enacted, this book sets out to foster that discussion.< Less

Landscape, progress toward a philosophy of sustainable occupancy By Aleta Karstad, Frederick W. Schueler
Paperback: $22.99

This is a collection of essays and other documents relevant to understanding human occupancy of a rural municipality in Eastern Ontario. The first essay explicitly deals with local land-use... More > planning, the next with two local species that indicate the need for such planning, and the middle seven with reflections on the current Ontario system of land-use and ecological principles relevant to particular organisms or habitats. Then The Lawn Care Manual draws lessons from government strictures on ecological planning, and applies them to the immediate surroundings of a homesite. Next is an ecology of the Kemptville Creek drainage basin, a philosophical essay, and the book concludes with a critique of a Counties' sustainability study, and a hymn of praise to mud. We hope that this collection will be useful to residents, municipal Councils, agencies, and non-governmental organizations. We dedicate it to all those with the fortitude to challenge the “system” on behalf of ecological integrity.< Less
